5th International Workshop on Carnot Batteries 2026

headerImagePath dlr 1 enJP ES SP3 in collaboration with University of Stuttgart is organising the 5th International Workshop on Carnot Batteries (IWCB 2026), an international scientific event bringing together leading researchers and engineers from across the globe to discuss recent advances in Carnot battery technology.

A particular emphasis of IWCB 2026 is the support and visibility of early‑career researchers. Young scientists, including PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers, will be given the opportunity to present their work in dedicated poster sessions and to engage in scientific exchange with internationally recognised experts.

In line with EERA’s mission to foster excellence and collaboration in energy research, EERA Joint Programme Energy Storage will recognise outstanding poster contributions by early‑career researchers through a Best Poster Award at the workshop.

Advanced Course on Modeling and Grid Integration of Energy Storage Systems

The “Advanced Course on Modeling and Grid Integration of Energy Storage Systems” is specifically designed for students, researchers and professionals with a strong interest in improving their knowledge in the field of energy storage, particularly in its integration into the electrical grid. The course focuses on the use of energy storage models using Matlab/Simulink to integrate into different applications related to energy management, as well as the real operation and control of different energy storage technologies connected to the grid, both independently and as hybrid energy storage system. Pumped-hydro, batteries, supercapacitors and flywheels will be the technologies covered during the course.

GRANTS
The Sub-Program SP4 on Mechanical Storage of the EERA Joint Programme on Energy Storage will award two scholarships of 750€ each to support participants whose professional development would significantly benefit from attending the course.


ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • Be students, researchers, or professionals with an interest in energy storage systems and with minimum knowledge of the Matlab/Simulink environment.
  • Be affiliated with an institution that is a member of the EERA Joint Programme on Energy Storage


APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
To apply for the grants, it is required to provide the following documents:

  1. Call Application form
  2. Short CV (max 2 pages) highlighting the education and status
  3. A motivation letter (maximum 250 words

The three documents must be sent by May 30th, 2026, to: marcos.lafoz@ciemat.es

 

EVALUATION CRITERIA

Each application will be evaluated with a score from 0 to 15 points, based on the overall alignment of the candidate’s profile with the topics and objectives of the course. The evaluation will take into account:

  • General profile, including academic/professional status, experience, and competencies in energy storage and modeling tools (e.g. MATLAB/Simulink). Additional consideration will be given to applicants affiliated with institutions involved in SP4 of the EERA Joint Programme on Energy Storage, as promoter of this call.
  • Curriculum Vitae, with particular attention to the relevance of the educational and professional background to the course topics (e.g. Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Energy Storage, electrochemical and mechanical storage technologies, automatic control)
  • Motivation letter, assessing the candidate’s interest, expectations, and potential benefit from attending the course

Thermal Energy Storage Workshop

The TES Workshop returns to Trondheim on 9–10 December 2026, gathering researchers, industry, and innovation stakeholders working to accelerate the deployment of thermal energy storage solutions for flexible and decarbonized energy systems.

The workshop is organized by the Gemini Centre for Thermal Energy Storage and hosted by SINTEF Energy Research. The 2026 edition will be closely connected to the IEA Tasks on Materials and Components for Thermal Energy Storage, whose expert meeting will take place in Trondheim on 7–8 December. The EERA Joint Programme on Energy Storage is also supporting this year's edition.
